Founded in 2006, Fresh Air Family has grown to offer more than 400 outdoor activities to an outreach of more than 10,000 people. Programs include: hiking, camping, canoeing, birding, star gazing, fossil hunting, orienteering, caving and searching for creatures great and small.
Fresh Air Family brings together a diversity of families -- young and not-so-young, married, single, adults and children– along with highly trained experts As we explore the natural world.

The Fresh Air Family program was founded by Verna Gates www.vernagates.com long time president of the Birmingham Wildflower Society. With her love of the great outdoors, she has always wanted to share its beauty and majesty with others, especially young people.
She also studies Alabama wildflowers and teaches ethnobotany as a visiting professor at Miles College. As a plant lore expert, she has appeared on NBC NightSide, National Public Radio in Canada, Voice of America, Pulse of the Planet, FOX 6 News and many more. For her conservation work, she has been named Alabama Conservationist of the Year by the Alabama Environmental Council, an Alabama Treasure by the Huntsville Times, and One of Alabama's Unforgettable Faces by the Alabama Bureau of Tourism.
